FAQ
How much does a session cost?
Individual/Couples/Family/EMDR: $155
Sliding fee-scale: $135 – $155
What is therapy and how does it work?
Psychotherapy is a consistent, collaborative process aimed at addressing emotional, psychological, and behavioral issues through a variety of therapeutic approaches and methods. In general, this includes building a trusting relationship, honest assessment of problem areas, goal setting, a tailored approach to particular problems, ongoing feedback and reinforcement, development of insight and meaning, along with evaluating progress over time. It works through influencing meaningful and sustainable change through different forms of communication.
How is marriage and family therapy different from individual therapy?
Marriage and Family Therapists differ from other licensed mental health professionals primarily in their systemic approach to understanding and addressing problems. What this means is that individuals are not only influenced by the content of their lives (e.g., the “what”), but also the processes, patterns and dynamics between them and others (e.g., the “how”). By identifying not only the content, but also these processes and patterns that exist as well, we can gain a more holistic understanding of where people are getting “stuck” in their lives, which aids us in developing better solutions for change. For example, couples may find much more insight, understanding and solutions when identifying how they are communicating, rather than just what they are communicating about. Both aspects are important.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
Therapy can be beneficial for anyone seeking personal growth, support, or improved relationships. The following list are general indicators that therapy could be of help to you:
1) If you’re finding yourself feeling stuck or overwhelmed.
2) If you would like to improve your relationships.
3) If you’re experiencing emotional or mental health challenges.
4) If you’re facing a major life transition.
5) If you’re wanting preventative/proactive support for upcoming challenges.
6) If you want to understand yourself more honestly and accurately.
7) If you value having a supportive, confidential place to process aspects of your life.
Are there signs that therapy might not be right for me?
Yes. If you are finding that you are not open to self-reflection or making changes, you may not be ready to engage fully in the therapeutic process. Additionally, therapy also requires a certain level of commitment and time, so it is important to assess your readiness to invest in yourself and the process.
How long does therapy typically last?
Each clinical session is 50-minutes, though I do offer longer session lengths upon request if desired.
How many sessions do I need?
While the answer to this question varies person-to-person, the average amount of sessions that I meet with a particular client (whether individual, couple or family) is nine sessions. With a typical weekly frequency, this totals 2 – 3 months of active time in therapy.
What is your role as a therapist?
Put simply, my role involves two primary things:
1) To help you make the most informed decisions in your life, and;
2) To create a curious and caring environment where you can choose to explore the topics you wish to address.
What can I expect in my first session?
In your first session, you can expect a welcoming environment where we’ll begin exploring your goals and reasons for seeking therapy. We will also discuss general areas of your life such as biological (e,g., sleep, diet exercise, etc.), psychological (e.g., mental health symptoms, etc.), and social (e.g., support system, relationships, etc.), in order to better help me understand how to tailor my approach to our conversations.
How can I prepare for my therapy sessions?
Preparing for your sessions will help you get the most out of the process. There are severals ways that you can prepare for either individual or relationship-based therapy:
1) Reflect on your current challenges. See if you can write these down as accurately as you can.
2) Identify your goals. Ask yourself what you’d like to achieve through therapy. These can range from more general to highly specific.
3) Be open to self-reflection. Reflect on how you typically respond to challenges and how those responses might affect others.
4) Communicate with your partner or family. If you’re attending therapy with a partner or family member, talk about what you both hope to gain from the sessions. Discuss any concerns about the process so that you can enter the session on the same page.
5) Be ready to share honestly. While it’s normal to feel nervous, being honest about your thoughts and feelings helps others understand your needs better. It can be helpful to remember not to worry about saying the “right” thing, but rather sharing your honest thoughts and feelings.
6) Manage your expectations. Therapy is a process and change takes active investment and time. Be patient with yourself and others as you work through challenges. Difficult conversations may arise, but these moments are often opportunities for growth and understanding.
7) Consider outside factors. Think about external stressors that might be affecting aspects of your health and life. Bringing awareness to these factors can help us see the bigger picture.
8) Plan for follow-through. Therapy often involves actionable steps between sessions, such as practicing new communication techniques or reflecting on specific experiences. Be prepared to engage with these tasks to reinforce your progress. Additionally, keeping a journal or taking notes on insights from each session can also help you track progress and growth.
Do you accept insurance?
At this time I do not accept payment through any insurance providers. However, I am currently a provider for Lyra, an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that some companies offer to their staff.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?
You may cancel or reschedule your appointment up to 24-hours in advance of your scheduled time without any fee or penalty. If cancellation or rescheduling occurs within 24-hours, and is not due to an emergency, you will be charged the session fee for the scheduled time of the session. This is due to the fact that it is difficult to fill the prior reserved time within 24-hours.
– Emergencies include: sickness, having to care for a sick loved one, unforeseen transportation issues, unforeseen work emergencies, and generally anything that could be qualified as outside of your control.
